A halakah informs us that, as a minimum, a husband was expected to provide on keening woman and two pipers for his wifes funeral, and this was required of even the poorest Jew. NOTE: There is no Islamic teaching of writing any thing on the shrouds. In addition to preparation of shrouds and a coffin, burial arrangements included the acquistion of keeners mourners and pipers. As part of our work in the monastery, two of our sisters sews burial shrouds for Secular Franciscan members. What Does a Burial Shroud Look Like A shroud is a long cloth that wraps around. Our burial shrouds are suitable for both cremation services and burials. Using a burial shroud consumes a minimum of materials while still properly honoring the deceased. Prices of shrouds vary from that of the simple robe, already mentioned, to 40 or more. The purpose of a burial shroud is to cover the deceased during the funeral service and burial. Lawn burial robes are little used compared with those of other materials. It is trimmed with the same material, in puffings, bows and tulles. The challenges Sandy encountered compelled her to create Forlora (for Laura) in her memory. The Shroud (Kafan) of a female should consist of five white garments, (Two winding sheet, a long loose sleeveless shirt, one above the head, another under the feet, and two around the body. The least costly shroud is of black lawn, and it sells at retail, ready made, for 2.25. After the passing of Laura in 2003, her Mother Sandy Gordon hurriedly sought to gather materials to shroud her dear daughter's body in preparation for a Bahai' burial.
